As the new school year begins, it’s the perfect time to prioritize your child’s eye health!
Why Vision Health Matters for Students
Did you know that 85% of children begin school without a proper eye exam, and that one in five have a vision disorder? Not knowing any differently, many children accept poor vision and other eye problems as normal. But if left untreated, vision issues can affect learning, behaviour, and long-term development. Since 80% of classroom learning relies on eyesight, it’s essential to begin the school year with an up to date eye exam and vision check!
Signs Your Child May Need an Eye Exam
Thanks to the Optometrists Network, here’s a quick checklist to help you spot early signs of vision problems:
- Struggling with learning or reading fluency
- Avoiding tasks that require a lot of visual focus
- Difficulty staying focused or paying attention
- Squinting or closing one eye while reading
- Rubbing their eyes often
- Frequently tilting their head
- Complaining of headaches or eye strain
- Poor hand-eye coordination
Recognizing these early can help prevent visual frustration and set them up for a successful year. If you notice any of these signs, it’s time to book a comprehensive eye exam.
Eye exams for children up to age 18 are fully covered by MSP once a year. For adults aged 19 to 64, regular eye exams every two years are recommended to help maintain long-term eye health. We also offer direct billing to select insurance providers to make your visit even more convenient.
